Evolution of a Trauma-Informed Educator – Fall 2023 Cohort

Evolution of a Trauma Informed Educator  takes you on a deep dive into understanding the context in which learning takes place, recognizing what is happening for students in moments of dysregulation, and creating regulatory focused environments.

In this 3-month 20-hour program, you’ll learn how to:

  • Identify vital factors that are keeping us stuck in our current challenges.
  • Recognize what might be missing from your universal and/or SEL programming, and more importantly what to do about it.
  • Work with the stress and anxiety that is occurring daily.
  • Use brain and body state awareness to guide you in applying strategies and create significant change and growth for your students!

This is one of the best courses I’ve participated in. The depth of information and understanding of how to relate to students is invaluable. It was presented in ways that benefit both educator and student and gave me realistic strategies. It’s also the first course I’ve taken that actually made it ok for the teacher to be human, too. I’m already seeing results with my students!” – Janet G. Franks, NBCT/ENS, EdS (Teacher, Lakeside Intermediate School)

Description

This course is for educators, SEL and behavior coaches, and school-based mental health professionals  and educational leaders.

20 hour, 3-month program includes:

  • Four – 1 ½ hour Live webinars
  • Six – 1 ½ Recorded  classes
  • Additional recorded material and bonus webinar
  • Three – 1 hour group consultations. We will attempt to organize the groups based on your role in schools or with educators.

Bonus Webinar: Using a Developmental Mindsets Paradigm when Working with Other Adults

  • Identifying stages in a developmental continuum in doing SEL and trauma-informed work
  • Gaining skills in more effective partnering and collaborating
  • Understanding different roles you can play in supporting others

Class 1 Webinar: Preparing Brains to Learn

  • The neurobiology of behavior – linking brain and body states
  • 3 questions as clues to arousal state
  • Using the right strategy at the right time

Class 2 Recording: The Process of developing self-regulation

  • Explicitly and intentionally teaching top-down skills
  • Creating bottom-up co-regulatory experiences
  • Implementing small shifts to daily routines that have a big impact

Class 3 Recording: Strategies for re-wiring brains and re-patterning nervous systems

  • Brian-aligned strategies and corresponding practical neuroscience
  • Practicing one foot in and one foot out
  • Responding with a match or mismatch – understanding and recognizing escalating behavior

Classes 1-3 Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn the neurobiology impacting behavior in moments of dysregulation.
  2. Participants will learn how brain states and body states impact students’ abilities to learn.
  3. Participants will gain skills in recognizing dysregulation in students so they can intervene before it continues to escalate.
  4. Participants will identify appropriate expectations and goals in different situations, and the neuroscience behind why some strategies are more effective at certain times.
  5. Participants will learn how to teach the skills involved in mastering the ability to self-regulate.
  6. Participants will examine ways to shift daily routines to include self-reflection which supports the re-wiring of brains and re-patterning of nervous systems.

Class 4 Webinar: Growing Windows of Tolerance & Shifting Perceptions

  • Becoming an external regulator
  • Understanding behaviors as attempts at regulation
  • Intentionally growing windows of tolerance

Class 5 Recording: Practical Classroom Strategies

  • Using a regulatory lens in practice from a layered perspective
  • Understanding discipline is proactive and reflective
  • Implementing somatosensory regulation, Braindrops and Learning Tools

Class 6 Recording: The Neurobiology of Regulating Ourselves and Others

  • Activating the Vagus Nerve
  • Understanding cues of safety and threat
  • Setting boundaries that support growth through balancing challenge and support

Classes 4-6 Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn to see behavior as clues to regulatory needs.
  2. Participants will learn to regulate in moments of dysregulation, helping them avoid exhaustion and burnout.
  3. Participants will be able to apply proactive regulatory strategies throughout the school day.
  4. Participants will translate knowledge into creating environments that support self-awareness and self-reflection in students leading to the discovery of their own regulatory needs.
  5. Participants will learn how to support growing students’ windows of tolerance, to more effectively re-wire the brains and re-pattern the nervous systems of students to support learning and growth.
  6. Participants will explore how to incorporate these approaches in various settings and from a systems and layered perspective.

Class 7 Webinar: Relationship Dynamics and Challenges

  • Exploring the dynamics in difficult interactions and getting stuck in a cycle of interacting
  • Understanding the internal world of the student, including negative beliefs
  • Moving from deflective to reflective awareness

Class 8 Recording: Relationship Dynamics and Individual Differences

  • Deepening our understanding of how information is processed
  • Examining sensitized stress reactions.
  • Understanding lagging skills from a brain and body lens

Class 9 Recording: Balancing Challenge and Support in Layered Social-Emotional, Behavior Plans

  • Re-examining differentiation and support and exploring typical interventions through a regulatory lens
  • Developing adult responses that match students’ brain and body states
  • Collecting meaningful data

Class 10 Webinar: Moving Forward

  • Navigating common barriers
  • Understanding the concept of values and ways of approaching relationships with ourselves and others
  • Supporting our own journeys

Classes 7-10 Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will examine relationship dynamics and learn how to balance challenge with support.
  2. Participants will explore ways to promote cues of safety in the classroom.
  3. Participants will learn to set boundaries through this lens.
  4. Participants will learn how to use a regulatory perspective when creating support plans for students.
  5. Participants will analyze and compare their beliefs around scaffolding academic versus social-emotional, and behavioral support.
  6. Participants will explore ways to collect meaningful data to track progress to guide interventions.
