Mental Health Professionals in Schools Programming

School counselors, psychologists and social workers play a critical role in bringing a mental health-informed lens to schools. In addition to these school-based roles, many clinicians working outside of schools collaborate with educators and school teams. Together, these roles support regulation, relational health, and access to learning within educational environments. Yet many encounter a unique challenge: translating clinical understanding into approaches that align with the realities of classrooms, educational systems, and collaboration with educators.

SEI’s programming supports mental health professionals working in or alongside schools in integrating neuroscience and nervous system science into school contexts while maintaining the integrity of their clinical orientation. The work strengthens clinical presence, deepens relational discernment, and supports meaningful collaboration with educators and school teams.

There are multiple ways to begin engaging with this work depending on your interests, goals, and the level of depth you are seeking.

Begin Exploring

Many mental health professionals first encounter SEI through free learning opportunities that introduce core elements of the framework.

These resources provide an opportunity to explore the work before deciding whether to pursue deeper professional learning.

Ways to begin exploring include:

• Free webinars and recorded learning opportunities
• Articles and educational resources available on the SEI website
• The SEI Pathway Quiz, which pulls from all of our learning opportunities and identifies options that align with your role and current challenges

Professional Learning for Mental Health Professionals in Schools

If you want to move beyond exploring individual ideas, deepen your understanding of the full framework, and apply it within school-based clinical work, there are two ways professionals typically engage.

Synergetic Approach to Education (SAE)

An immersive program designed specifically for mental health professionals working in or alongside schools. SAE supports embodying Synergetic Play Therapy principles within educational environments while strengthening collaboration with educators and school teams.

Participants deepen their ability to remain relational and thoughtful under system pressure while translating clinical understanding into language and approaches that support collaboration across roles.

Behavioral Health Program (BHP)

School-based mental professionals who need to meet Colorado behavioral health relicensure requirements often begin with the 15-hour Behavioral Health Program, which provides a complete pathway to meet the state’s requirements within one cohesive training experience.

The relicensure requirement applies to everyone that holds a license to work in schools in Colorado, including special services licenses, and went into effect in July 2025.

Choosing Where to Begin

• Begin with the Synergetic Approach to Education (SAE) if you want deeper integration of the framework within your clinical work while strengthening collaboration with educators and school teams.

• Begin with the Behavioral Health Program (BHP) if you need to meet Colorado behavioral health relicensure requirements while learning the SEI framework through a complete training pathway.

If you’re unsure where to begin, our SEI Pathway Quiz can help identify the programming options that align with your role and current challenges.

Strengthening Collaborative School-Based Practice

SEI’s work is designed to support mental health professionals in schools in:

• Applying nervous system science within clinical work in educational environments
• Strengthening collaboration with educators and school teams
• Supporting regulation and relational health across learning environments
• Maintaining clinical presence while navigating complex school systems

These programs help clinicians translate their clinical expertise into practices that align with the realities of school-based work while strengthening their impact within educational systems.
